Environmental and Occupational Medicine

Occupational medicine focuses on supporting the health of working people through prevention and treatment of work-related diseases and injuries as well as increasing productivity and social adjustment in the workplace. In this department, we conduct research on health services to enable the optimal delivery of occupational health services. We are also engaged in research on women’s health to support the health of working women, in response to the increase in the number of working women in Japan.
Environmental and occupational health is becoming increasingly important from a global perspective as represented by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From this perspective, we are promoting epidemiological research on the effects of chemical substances and the environment on human health, as well as research and practices related to risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication of chemical substances. Ongoing projects are as follows:

  • Indium cohort study
  • Epidemiological study of occupational bladder cancer caused by orthotoluidine and other aromatic amines
  • Cohort study on lung development in children due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5)
